The Conference is On and We Need a Name
November 29th, 2007 by daveA group of us Grand Strand bloggers got together tonight to discuss whether or not to pursue a new media conference in Myrtle Beach this spring. We kicked around the pros and cons, best and worst cases and decided we can live with them all. In other words, it is on! We’re looking at April 2008 with an exact date to be pinned down shortly and tentative space to be secured. We’re not sure what to expect on turnout and are building in mechanisms to allow us to scale up if we exceed our attendance predictions, etc etc. All details will start to take shape soon. Further updates will be posted to this blog so subscribing will be the best way to find out what is happening.
The first order of business is to pick a name for this conference so that we can register a domain and go forward. We are accepting nominations until midnight EST on Wednesday December 6th. After that, we’ll put up a poll for voting until the following Sunday. Whatever wins we will roll forward with. Please leave your nominations in comments, second other suggestions and make your opinions known. For those of you with your own blogs, please publicize our current nomination process and that fact we are going for it. Everyone is welcome, but we are particularly focusing on the magic circle of about 3ish hours driving distance, which includes roughly south to Savannah, west to Augusta and north to Raleigh or so.
Thanks to everyone whose enthusiasm and interest made us decide to go forward. We’ll do our best to have a shindig everyone learns from and everyone is proud of.

To throw out the first suggestion, honorary Grand Strand Blogger Robert from Virginia, a very strong advocate for this conference, has suggested “Upload Myrtle Beach” as a name to me (and even drew up a logo for it!) I’d through “Upload Carolina” as a slightly broader variant that maybe sounds a little less provincial.
Hit us with your thoughts!

[...] We decided that we want to hold the conference next spring, and that even if 20 people show up we’ll consider that a success for the first year that we can build on. Our first order of business is to name the conference so we can start to do all the other things like set up a website. If you have any thoughts, please leave a comment on our group blog with your nominations. We’re throwing it open to a vote for a short time (to avoid permanent bikeshedding) and then will move forward into the serious business of planning it. If you other bloggers and southern ones in particular could link to that and spread the link love, we’d highly appreciate it. Onward and upwards! Here we go! I have blasted this post to my blog and my news section on my main page. Rock on!

I would think that “Download Carolina” would be more technically correct. It’s about getting info out, no? Maybe that’s being too literal.

since the whole thing is about hands-on and sharing, I’ve been trying to think of something that conveys that. P2P is about ultimate term in sharing within the computer geek circles. But I can’t quite get a name with P2P in it to gel in my head.
Carolina P2P, P2P Carolina, Grand Strand P2P, that sort of thing is what I’m getting at. So I thought I would throw it out there and see if someone else can gel it.
Of those 3 I like Carolina P2P the best.

With absolutely no humility, what about “ConvergeCoastal”?
Or “ConvergeCarolina”?
We’ll help with the hosting/blog/related online stuff…

[...] Converge at the Coast By Sue Dave Slusher, of ConvergeSouth-supporting fame, is holding a Myrtle Beach geek conference this April. He’s asking for help naming the conference. With a speck of humility, I suggested “ConvergeCarolina” or “ConvergeCoastal.” Got any ideas? This entry is filed under blogging, ConvergeSouth. I’m not sure what we should call this one, but I think “CongealSouth” is already taken.
I’m putting on my thinking cap… which is a real cap, with wires and knobs and oscillators sticking out of it…

I’m thinking:
Tobacco Road
In reference to the novel not the NC basketball scene. It’s appropriate because I’m big on Southern heritage and overcoming adversity like the characters in the book. Wikipedia states the lesson this way: an ignorant and sinful man who is redeemed by his love of the land and his faith in the fertility and the promise of soil.

Dan really has that hat. I’ve seen it.
I spent a few hours in a meeting today and the topic (oddly, for scientists) was about ‘branding’. Not that I have any ideas right now - but it would be nice to have something that had an interesting acronym. The folks at the salmon genome project have GRASP - Genomic Research on Atlantic Salmon project. So something that starts with an SC…
SCAB? SCAR? SCAT? Blog South Carolina. BSC? (not catchy, but good bumper sticker). SCOL? (SC Online) SCOW?
Maybe Blog South Carolina. But I really like Tobacco Road (but then I like Faulkner, et al).

Ok Here goes my top five. The rest of the names I have come up with can be found on my website.
In No Particular Order
1) Digital Crossroads
2) FEED South
3) Digital Dixie
4) Digital Graze - South (or The Southern Tech Graze)
5) The Southern Media Dish Out (could just be called Dish Out with The Southern Media as an added moniker.)
I also like the idea of an acronym. I have been racking my brains on this and I have come up with the letters (words) but not the words associated with the letters.
SHOUT
FEED
